UN chief calls for ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand

United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged Cambodia and Thailand to immediately agree to a ceasefire and resolve their border dispute through dialogue.
In a statement issued on Saturday, UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said Guterres was “is deeply concerned about the continuation of armed clashes at the border between Cambodia and Thailand since 24 July”. He condemned the loss of lives, injuries to civilians and damage to homes and infrastructure, and reiterated the UN’s readiness to assist in achieving a peaceful resolution.
Meanwhile, US president Donald Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social that he had spoken to the Cambodian prime minister and Thailand’s acting prime minister to request a ceasefire. Trump claimed both countries were keen to end hostilities and pursue peace, adding that the US would not move forward with trade agreements while the conflict continued.
Following the talks, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed his country’s willingness to agree to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire”. Thailand responded that it agreed in principle but sought genuine commitment from Cambodia.
Despite these statements, gunfire was still reported along the border early on Sunday, according to the National Broadcasting Services of Thailand, citing Thai army sources.
