Unlocking India-US potential: Modi welcomes Trump’s call for renewed trade talks
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s call for the resumption of trade talks between India and the United States, saying the negotiations would help realize the “limitless potential” of the partnership between the two countries.
Trump announced on his social media platform Truth Social that Washington and New Delhi were restarting efforts to resolve trade barriers.
Responding to the remarks, Modi posted on X: “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India-US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people.”
Trump, in his post on Tuesday (US time), said, “I am pleased to announce that India, and the United States of America, are continuing negotiations to address the Trade Barriers between our two Nations.”
He also described Modi as a “very good friend” and added, “I feel certain that there will be no difficulty in coming to a successful conclusion for both of our great countries.”
The latest exchange reflects a softer tone from Trump, who only weeks earlier had sharply criticized India’s trade and energy policies. On August 27, he imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian imports, doubling an earlier 25 per cent levy in response to New Delhi’s continued purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine conflict.
At a White House press conference on Friday, Trump had nonetheless said, “I’ll always be friends with Prime Minister Modi,” calling him a “great Prime Minister.”
