US extends Russian oil sanctions waiver by one month

Washington: The United States has prolonged a sanctions waiver by a month, enabling countries to purchase Russian petroleum products already at sea, despite earlier signals against renewal.

The US Treasury Department issued General License No. 134B late Friday, replacing the prior licence (No. 134A) that expired on April 11. It covers Russian oil loaded on or before April 17, extending availability through May 16—freeing up around 140 million barrels amid soaring prices linked to the US-Iran conflict.

The waiver follows similar one-month exemptions granted earlier this year, including to India from March 5 and others ending April 11. However, it excludes transactions involving entities in Iran, North Korea, Cuba, or parts of Ukraine.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had stated on Wednesday that Washington would not renew waivers for Russian or Iranian oil, underscoring shifting enforcement amid geopolitical tensions.
