Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin presented royalties to five eminent Tamil scholars on Monday, recognising their literary contributions during the valedictory function of ‘Tamil Week’ at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai. The event, which commemorated the birth anniversary of celebrated Tamil poet ‘Pavendhar’ Bharathidasan, saw the nationalisation of their works by the state government.
The scholars honoured were the late ‘Kavikko’ S. Abdul Rahman, the late Merwin, and the late A. Palani, as well as poets Ku. Ma. Kothandam and Ilama Tamilnavan. The Chief Minister presented cheques of Rs 10 lakh each to the scholars or their family members. Family members of Abdul Rahman, Merwin, and Palani received the royalties on their behalf, while Kothandam and Ilama Tamilnavan were present to accept theirs in person.
In his address, Stalin emphasised the importance of the nationalisation of these works, noting that it was a reflection of the government's commitment to making Tamil scholars’ contributions accessible to a wider audience. He stated, “This nationalisation is not merely an administrative task but a cultural imperative. By ensuring these works are available to all, we are enriching Tamil literature and honouring the lifelong efforts of these scholars.”
Stalin also distributed prizes to the winners of various literary competitions held across Tamil Nadu as part of ‘Tamil Week.’ The event was attended by Ministers Duraimurugan, M.P. Saminathan, R.S. Rajakannappan, Ma. Subramanian, P.K. Sekarbabu, Chennai Mayor R. Priya, and several legislators.
Since April 29, Tamil Nadu has hosted a series of literary events and discussions in district headquarters, drawing participation from scholars, students, and literature enthusiasts. Stalin highlighted that Bharathidasan’s legacy continues to inspire generations, saying, “Our government is committed to fostering a vibrant literary culture that upholds Tamil pride and progress.”
The event coincided with the DMK government's fifth anniversary in office. On Sunday, the government showcased its achievements over the past four years, highlighting flagship schemes such as the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme and Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam, which have received praise from both national and international bodies, including the United Nations.
Health Minister Ma. Subramanian remarked that Tamil Nadu has emerged as a model for social welfare and health initiatives across India. The government also highlighted its proactive response to crises like cyclones, floods, and the COVID-19 pandemic, asserting, “Despite the Union government’s indifference, we safeguarded the people of Tamil Nadu through timely action.”
