65-year-old man beaten to death over Facebook post in Bihar, six arrested

A 65-year-old Muslim man, Sheikh Wazul Haq, died on June 5 following a violent mob attack outside his residence near Phulwaria village in Bihar’s East Champaran district.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage after videos of the assault circulated online.

The footage shows a group of six to seven young men wielding sticks, approaching Haq’s house and launching a brutal assault on him and his 25-year-old son, Mujibur Rehman. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Haq succumbed to his injuries. Rehman, who was initially in critical condition, has since been discharged and is currently in police custody.

According to a statement by Motihari Police, the attack stemmed from a disagreement between two groups over a Facebook comment made four months ago.

So far, six individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Authorities have registered a case under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 302 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
