IIM-Calcutta student alleges being drugged, raped in boys’ hostel

Kolkata: A second-year student of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) has alleged that she was raped in the boys’ hostel of the campus. One student has been detained in connection with the case.

According to police sources, the incident occurred on Friday evening, when the female student was reportedly invited to the boys’ hostel by a fellow student for a discussion regarding job counselling. In her complaint, filed later that night at the Haridevpur Police Station, she alleged that she was offered pizza and cold drinks during the meeting, after which she lost consciousness.

Upon regaining consciousness, the student felt she had been sexually assaulted. She immediately left the institute premises, contacted a friend, and reached the Haridevpur Police Station, where she lodged a complaint against the accused student.

The complainant stated that she attempted to resist the accused’s advances, but he allegedly assaulted her physically, rendering her unconscious. She also claimed that although she wished to sign the visitors’ register before entering the hostel, the accused prevented her from doing so.

Acting promptly on the complaint, the police detained one student early on Saturday and began questioning him. An official confirmation of rape will depend on the outcome of the victim's medical examination, police added.

A full-scale investigation has been initiated. The identity of the accused has not yet been disclosed.

This incident has drawn parallels with a similar case reported last month at Kasba Law College, where a female student was allegedly lured to the students' union room under the pretext of being offered an important position, before being assaulted. In both cases, the victims were reportedly invited under the guise of academic or career-related discussions.
