Man who allegedly helped terrorists jumps into river in J&K, drowns

New Delhi: The man who allegedly helped terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district drowned after he jumped into a river.

Imitiaz Ahmad Magray, 23, was leading the security forces to the terrorists' hideout when he jumped into the river to escape, NDTV reported.

Magray was accused of having given food and shelter to terrorists involved in the massacre at Pahalgam.

Footage showed Magrav diving into the Veshaw River in a bid to escape from the security forces.

Magray told police, after he was picked up on Saturday, that he had given food and logistics to the terrorist to hide in the forest in Kulgam's Tangmarg.

Afterwards, he agreed to take the security forces to the hideout of the terrorists.

He was leading a team of security forces on Sunday morning to the hideout when he made the reckless attempt to escape.

The whole incident was captured on the camera right from the moment he made a bolt for the river.

Despite his efforts at swimming, the strong currents carried him away.

He was seen tossed about in the current before eventually drowned with the entire sequence being captured on camera.

The security forces have now condemned the spreading of misinformation about the incident, saying it should not be wrongly blamed for the man’s death.

Peoples Democratic Party leader and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday alleged a conspiracy in the death of Imtiyaz Ahmad Magray, taking to X with a post: ‘Yet another body has been recovered from a river in Kulgam raising serious allegations of foul play. Local residents allege that Imtiyaz Magray was picked up by the army two days ago and now mysteriously his body has surfaced in the river’.
