Mumbai hit by heavy showers, waterlogging in many areas

Mumbai/Delhi: In Mumbai, heavy rains on Sunday night and early morning have led to severe waterlogging. Traffic has been disrupted, and flight and railway operations have also been affected. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, intense spells of rain and gusty winds at isolated places in districts of Maharashtra.

IMD has issued an alert for heavy rainfall throughout the day in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar districts, and an orange alert for very heavy rainfall has been issued in Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. It also added thunderstorms and heavy rains with strong winds at a speed of 50-60 km per hour expected in some districts.

In Maharashtra, the southwest monsoon arrived on Sunday. It was the earliest onset of monsoon here in 35 years.

However, in Delhi, Monday morning witnessed light showers. However, heavy rains and thunderstorms are forecasted. An orange alert has been issued in the national capital. With light rains, the minimum temperature dropped to 25.2 degrees Celsius, 1.4 degrees below the seasonal average, IMD reported. Meanwhile, a portion of Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed in rains and strong winds the previous day.

IMD forecasts that the monsoon will fall in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and parts of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu in the next three days.

Meanwhile, in Kerala, the monsoon arrived a week earlier than the usual onset date. Heavy rains are continuing in the state, while six people died in separate rain-related incidents. A red alert has been declared in 11 districts today, namely Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. An orange alert has been issued in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha districts.
