WhatsApp faces outage in India; users unable to send messages, status

Ne Delhi: WhatsApp experienced an outage in India on Saturday, leaving users unable to send messages or upload status updates. According to Down Detector, a platform that tracks app outages, at least 81% of users reported issues with message delivery, while 16% faced problems with the overall app experience.

A user on X shared, "Is it just me or is your WhatsApp down as well? I’m trying to upload a status, and it’s taking forever." However, WhatsApp has not yet issued a statement regarding the outage.

Some users also reported similar disruptions on Facebook and Instagram, both of which are owned by Meta. One user on X posted, "Hey @WhatsApp, is the app down? I’m having trouble sending messages – they’re just not going through. Anyone else facing this?"

This outage follows a massive global disruption in February, when users were unable to send messages or make calls on WhatsApp, with over 9,000 complaints registered on Down Detector.

Earlier in the day, digital payment services through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) also faced disruptions, affecting millions of users and hindering local shopping, bill payments, and business transactions. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates UPI services, acknowledged the issue on X, explaining that intermittent technical problems led to partial declines in UPI transactions. The NPCI assured users that it was working to resolve the issue and apologized for the inconvenience caused.
