IndiGo hikes fuel charges for domestic, international flights

New Delhi: Low-cost carrier IndiGo on Wednesday announced an increase in fuel charges for both domestic and international flights for all new bookings made from 12:01 a.m. on April 2, citing a sharp surge in aviation fuel prices.
The airline said the move comes amid a steep rise in jet fuel costs due to supply chain disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Jet Fuel Monitor, prices have surged over 130 per cent month-on-month. In response, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas and the Ministry of Civil Aviation have allowed a partial and staggered increase of 25 per cent in domestic aviation fuel prices, helping mitigate the impact on passengers.
IndiGo has recalibrated its domestic fuel charges based on travel distance, with charges ranging from ₹275 for journeys up to 500 km to ₹950 for distances above 2,000 km. The airline expressed gratitude to the government for timely intervention, noting that without it, the April 2026 fuel cost spike would have severely affected domestic travel affordability.
For international operations, where aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have more than doubled in the last month, IndiGo has revised fuel charges per sector. Charges range from ₹900 for travel within the Indian Subcontinent up to 500 km to ₹10,000 for flights to the UK and Europe, with scaled rates for GCC and Middle East, Southeast Asia and China, Africa, Greece, and Turkey.
IndiGo stated that fully offsetting the fuel price increase would require substantial fare hikes, but the airline has passed on only a portion to customers to limit the financial burden. The airline added that the increase is driven by a sudden and significant change in the operating environment and that it will continue to monitor the situation and adjust charges as appropriate.
