Kamal Haasan moves K'taka HC to secure ‘Thug Life’ release amid ban calls
text_fieldsBengaluru: Actor Kamal Haasan has approached the Karnataka High Court seeking directions to ensure the release and screening of his upcoming film, 'Thug Life', in the state amid calls for a ban by Kannada organisations. The controversy erupted following Haasan’s statement claiming Tamil as the mother of the Kannada language, which sparked outrage among Kannada groups.
In a petition filed through the Chief Executive Officer of Raj Kamal Films International, Haasan’s production company has urged the court to direct the Karnataka government, the Police Department, and relevant film bodies not to obstruct the film’s release. The petition also requested security arrangements for the film’s screening from the Director General and Inspector General of Police, as well as the Bengaluru Police Commissioner.
Meanwhile, office bearers of the Karnataka Film Chambers of Commerce met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday, demanding that the state government prevent the release of 'Thug Life' in Karnataka. The Chief Minister assured the delegation that his government would take legal action and offered full cooperation, stressing the need for unity in matters concerning language.
The film body representatives explained they lack the authority to impose a ban but appealed to exhibitors to voluntarily refrain from screening the film. Following the meeting, distributors of 'Thug Life' expressed uncertainty and have requested an additional day from the Kannada Film Chambers of Commerce to decide on the film’s screening.
Sources report that Kamal Haasan is scheduled to return to Chennai from abroad on Tuesday. The distributors are expected to consult with the actor before making a final decision on the release.
The situation remains tense as Kamal Haasan has refused to apologise. The Kannada film body has stated that even if an apology is tendered, they will convene a meeting to decide on permitting the film’s screening under the current circumstances.
