Actor Mohanlal on Monday conveyed his Women's Day wishes quoting words from the ancient legal book Manusmriti which has now sparked outrage among the netizens.

The netizens raised questions under the actor's post asking him if it was necessary to quote the excerpts from a book that promotes patriarchal thinking and contains extremely anti-feminist texts to greet women.

Excerpt from Manusmriti posted by Mohanlal:

'yatra nāryastu pūjyante ramante tatra devatāḥ।

yatraitāstu na pūjyante sarvāstatrāphalā:'

(Divinity flourishes where woman is revered

But where the woman is abused, all action fails.)

The actor was also criticised for the misogynistic elements in his movies and his stand on the actress-assault case.
