Mumbai: Five passengers died after falling off an overly crowded train near Mumbra station in Thane district on Monday.
The local train was heading towards Thane's Kasara area from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, NDTV reported.
It is reported citing officials that at least 10 to 12 passengers fell down on the track.
The incident is reported to have occurred due to overcrowding with many passengers travelling, hanging on the train doors.
Railway officials have rushed to the accident site and the injured have been taken to the nearest hospital, according to the report.
Meanwhile, an investigation into the incident is underway.
The Central Railway said in a statement that ‘Some passengers travelling towards CSMT fell from the train at Thane’s Mumbra railway station. The injured are being taken immediately to the nearest hospital. Investigation into the accident has begun. Local services have also been affected by the incident.’
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolence to the families of those died in the accident while calling the incident ‘unfortunate’, adding that ‘The injured have been immediately admitted to Shivaji Hospital and Thane General Hospital and are undergoing treatment.’
