Itanagar: An eight-year-old student was charred to death and three others injured in a fire at a government residential school in Shi-Yomi district, Arunachal Pradesh, on Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at the boys’ hostel of Papikrung Government Residential School, Superintendent of Police S K Thongdok told PTI. The deceased has been identified as Tashi Jempen, a Class 3 student from Chango village.

The injured students, Lukhi Pujen (8), Tanu Pujen (9), and Tayi Pujen (11) were initially taken to a hospital in Tato, around 85 km from the school, and were later being transferred to Zonal General Hospital at Aalo in West Siang district for better treatment. Authorities said their condition is reported to be out of danger.

A police team has been dispatched to the remote village, located 17 km from Monigong town, to investigate the incident. The cause of the fire is under probe, with officials noting that the village lacks power connectivity. Papikrung is situated just before the last Indian Army post in Tadadege village.
