Air India disburses ₹25 lakh each to families of Ahmedabad crash victims
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Air India has announced that it has disbursed interim compensation of ₹25 lakh each to the families of 147 of the 229 passengers who perished in the recent AI 171 plane crash in Ahmedabad, as well as to the families of the 19 individuals who died at the crash site. The Tata Group-owned airline also confirmed that documentation for an additional 52 victims has been verified, and their families will receive compensation progressively.
The airline began the process of releasing interim compensation over a month ago, aiming to provide immediate financial relief to those affected by the tragedy. In a statement issued on Saturday, Air India reaffirmed its support, saying, “Air India stands in solidarity with the families and those affected by the AI 171 accident. We continue to mourn their loss and remain fully committed to providing support during this difficult time.”
In a further step to aid recovery efforts, the Tata Group has established “The AI 171 Memorial and Welfare Trust,” which aims to provide sustained assistance beyond immediate financial compensation. The Trust has pledged to restore the B.J. Medical College Hostel infrastructure, which was damaged during the crash. It also announced plans to extend an ex gratia payment of ₹1 crore to each of the families of the deceased.
Beyond financial support, the Trust will offer aid and trauma support to first responders, medical and disaster relief workers, social workers, and government personnel who played critical roles in rescue and relief operations following the crash.
The AI 171 tragedy occurred last month when an Air India flight en route from Ahmedabad to London crashed shortly after take-off, resulting in the deaths of all 241 people on board and 19 individuals on the ground.
A preliminary investigation by the Air Accidents Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has indicated that the aircraft’s engines shut down just seconds after take-off due to a fuel supply cutoff. A full and final report on the cause of the crash is still awaited.
