Ambedkar varsity student suspended for questioning VC’s Ram temple remark in R-Day speech

A student of Dr B.R. Ambedkar University Delhi has been suspended for allegedly criticising Vice-Chancellor Anu Singh Lathar’s Republic Day speech, in which she stated that the Ram Janmabhoomi movement is a 525-year-old issue rather than a recent development, while the student has condemned the university’s action as an attempt to suppress dissent.

The vice-chancellor had also praised the government for the construction of the Ram temple and advocated for Dr B.R. Ambedkar to be recognised as a national figure rather than solely associated with the Dalit community.

Following the circulation of an email criticising Lathar’s remarks through the university’s official mail system in January, the Proctorial Board cited indiscipline and the use of derogatory language against the head of the institution in its order on March 21, leading to the suspension of the final-year MA student.

The student, who is also associated with the All India Students’ Association (AISA), has been barred from the campus for six months, covering the full winter semester, which she claims will adversely affect her academic progress and future prospects.

The university’s decision has drawn criticism, with the student arguing that the move is part of a broader effort to silence opposing voices and restrict democratic expression on campus.

She has alleged that the administration’s action amounts to mental and emotional harassment aimed at discouraging students from questioning authority.
