Assam floods affect over 5 lakh people, death toll in Northeast rising

Guwahati: Assam is continuing to battle with the first wave of floods, which has affected around 5.15 lakh people in 22 districts.
On Monday, the state reported one additional death, bringing the total to 38 in the Northeast: 11 in Assam, nine in Arunachal Pradesh, six in Meghalaya and Mizoram, three in Sikkim, two in Tripura, and one in Nagaland.
Incessant rains have caused floods and landslides throughout the region. According to the Assam government's flood advisory, 5,15,039 persons and agriculture totalling 12,610.27 hectares have been affected.
Over 1.85 lakh individuals are housed in either relief camps or distribution centres.
The Brahmaputra and some of its tributaries were flowing above the danger threshold in some areas.
Lakhimpur, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Sribhumi are among the most severely hit districts.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) projected heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas and moderate rainfall in the rest of Assam over the next 24 hours. On Monday,
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma examined the flood situation in Lakhimpur. He promised that the government would take care of the state's impacted people.
He assured through a post on X that ration, books, clothes, utensils, and duplicate documents, each item would be provided and added that after the floods subside, their houses would also be rebuilt.
The Manipur floods affected about 20,000 people. Continuous rain, along with overflowing rivers and embankment breaches, flooded wide sections of the Imphal Valley.
According to official sources, 3,365 dwellings were damaged. The government established 31 relief camps in the Imphal East district, TNIE reported.
The Senapati district was devastated by a flood. A few hundred affected persons were seeking refuge in relief camps. A huge landslide along Nagaland's National Highway-2 delayed traffic between Nagaland and Manipur. The incident happened near the Naga Heritage Village Kisama.
The IMD in Tripura issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Khowai, West, and South Tripura districts, as well as a yellow alert for the remaining five districts, until Tuesday morning.
10,813 flood-affected persons were housed in 66 relief camps. According to an official report, 219 dwellings in the districts of Gomati, Khowai, Sepahijala, South Tripura, and North Tripura were either completely or partially damaged.
