Bengaluru Metro transports organ, achieves historic milestone
text_fieldsIn a landmark achievement for the city, the Bengaluru Metro has facilitated its first-ever organ transport, becoming only the second metro rail system in India to be used for such a life-saving mission.
On Friday evening, a donated human liver was transported across the city using the Namma Metro, marking a pivotal moment in the integration of public infrastructure with emergency medical services.
The liver was initially moved by ambulance from Vydehi Hospital to the Whitefield Metro Station. Accompanied by a doctor and a seven-member medical team, the organ arrived at the station at 8:38 PM, where it was received by an Assistant Security Officer (ASO) and Metro staff. Following documentation and mandatory security checks, the organ was swiftly transferred to a train.
The metro train departed Whitefield Station at 8:42 PM and reached Rajarajeshwarinagar Metro Station by 9:48 PM. Upon arrival, another ASO and station personnel coordinated the next stage of the mission. The organ was immediately handed over to a waiting ambulance, which transported it to Sparsh Hospital for a critical transplant procedure.
The operation adhered strictly to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs’ guidelines and the Joint Procedure Order issued by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), ensuring smooth coordination across departments.
