Bengaluru: Former Karnataka Minister and BJP leader KS Eshwarappa announced the demolition of mosques that were built during the Mughal era to construct temples in their place, stirring a new controversy.

Addressing a public gathering in Haveri, Karnataka, Eshwarappa emphasized that the mosques being targeted for demolition are those mosques, believed to have been built by demolishing temples during the Mughal era.

Referring to the Kashi Vishwanath temple and Mathura Krishna temple, he highlighted that the court is currently conducting a survey report, similar to what occurred in Ayodhya, for the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Furthermore, Eshwarappa expressed his belief that similar developments will take place for the Mathura Krishna temple.

He stated that all mosques built by Mughals after demolition of temples, will eventually be demolished, and temples will be reinstated at those sites. Eshwarappa clarified that the intention is not to destroy newly built mosques, but solely those constructed on temple premises. He emphasized that this course of action may occur at any time in the present or future, even after several decades.

This is not the first time Eshwarappa has found himself embroiled in controversy. Just a few months ago, in April, he made derogatory remarks referring to the Islamic call to prayer, known as azan, as a "headache" during one of his election speeches. The incident took place while the azan was being recited from a nearby mosque, drawing criticism from various quarters.

It is important to note that Eshwarappa had earlier announced his retirement from electoral politics and did not participate in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections. However, his recent remarks have once again thrust him into the spotlight, attracting widespread condemnation from religious and political groups alike.

Muslim organizations and leaders have condemned Eshwarappa's comments, calling them divisive and an attack on religious harmony. They argue that such rhetoric not only promotes disharmony but also disregards the principles of coexistence and respect for all faiths.

Political opponents of the BJP have also criticized Eshwarappa's statements, accusing him of trying to polarize society for political gains. They argue that such inflammatory remarks go against the principles of secularism enshrined in India's constitution and undermine the country's diverse fabric.
