New Delhi: BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari, claimed on Thursday that two “Kashmiri individuals” sneakily installed a “high-performance” wireless antenna on their rooftop in Kolkata. He shared an image of the antenna, too, but which turned out to be a unit of JioFibre internet connection, NDTV reported.

Following the incident of the Pahalgam terror attack, India is under a chilling atmosphere of tension, and the chances of rumours and fake claims taking the public sphere are high. It is at this moment a person of high profile makes such false claims through a medium that is easily accessible to everyone in the country.

The device was installed on the rooftop by two individuals, a Muslim and a Hindu, both from Madhya Pradesh, who are working together. They are two engineers who are looking for a career in pisciculture, and the antenna has nothing to do with anything fishy, as per the BJP leader’s claims.

Adhikari’s X post goes like this: "A local contact of mine has shared information with me that two Kashmiri individuals have installed a NanoBeam 2AC compact and high-performance wireless network bridge at the rooftop. It's designed to provide efficient and reliable solutions for high-speed, long-distance wireless connectivity. I would request DGP @WBPolice @NIA_India to look into it and find out whether any suspicious activity is going on.”

However, within hours of the post, X added a Community Note citing a Baruipur Police statement refuting Adhikari’s allegations.

NDTV quoted police, "The input was immediately verified locally. In reality, the two individuals, one of them a Hindu and the other a Muslim, both from Madhya Pradesh, rented a flat in Baruipur about three weeks ago. Engineers by profession, they were exploring business opportunities in pisciculture in West Bengal through a local friend. There is a simple Jiofibre network in their flat as is used by numerous citizens, with nothing suspicious about it."
