New Delhi: Three-time BJP MLA Vijender Gupta was elected as the new Speaker of the 8th Delhi Assembly during its first session on Monday.

The ruling BJP proposed two motions for Gupta’s election—one moved by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and the other by Cabinet Minister Ravinder Indraj. The motions were seconded by ministers Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Parvesh Verma.

The election was conducted by Arvinder Singh Lovely, who was serving as the pro-tem Speaker. The motions were passed by voice vote, securing Gupta’s appointment to the key legislative post.

Following his election, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Leader of Opposition Atishi escorted Vijender Gupta to his chair, marking the formal transition of the Assembly’s leadership.
