B'luru woman seeks medicine to kill mother-in-law, doctor alerts police
text_fieldsBengaluru: A Bengaluru woman is under investigation after allegedly seeking a prescription for tablets to kill her mother-in-law. The doctor she approached, Dr. Sunil Kumar Hebbi, immediately reported the matter to the police, leading to the registration of a case by the Sanjaynagar police.
Dr. Hebbi recounted that on February 17 at around 2 p.m., he received a WhatsApp message from an unknown number. The sender introduced herself as Sahana and initially requested communication in Kannada. When he inquired about her concerns, she hesitated before asking if he would scold her for what she was about to say. Reassuring her that she could speak openly, he was then shocked when she directly requested a prescription for two tablets to kill her mother-in-law.
He firmly rejected the request, explaining that as a doctor, his duty is to save lives, not take them. He also condemned the misuse of his phone number, which she had obtained from social media. Despite his clear refusal, Sahana persisted, repeatedly pleading with him to simply send the names of the tablets. Alarmed by her insistence, Dr. Hebbi decided to file a formal complaint at the Sanjaynagar police station later that afternoon.
Though the police assured swift action, no immediate steps had been taken at the time, Dr. Hebbi said, adding that they would have to wait and see what action follows. He also noted that Sahana’s WhatsApp display picture was not visible, raising suspicions about her identity. Given his active role in social activism and past encounters with opposition during anti-corruption campaigns, he expressed concerns that this might have been an attempt to entrap him.
When asked if he knew the accused, Dr. Hebbi denied any prior connection. He explained that Sahana had found his contact details through an Instagram post and had no previous interactions with him. Their conversation lasted about five minutes. Later, she called again, apologizing and pleading with him not to report her. When questioned about her intentions, she claimed she was being harassed by her mother-in-law and could no longer endure the mistreatment.
Dr. Hebbi, who is well-known on social media for his advocacy on health and social issues, had also contested in the Karnataka Assembly elections from Vijayapura. He remains uncertain whether the incident was a genuine case of distress or an attempt to target him due to his activism.
According to him, the police inspector handling the case has assured that efforts are underway to track and trace the accused.
