Chandigarh: The Himachal Government intends to issue a worldwide tender for the nation's longest ropeway by the end of this month or the beginning of next month in an effort to shorten travel times and ease traffic to Shimla.

It would take two hours to cover the more than forty kilometres between Parwanoo and Shimla. According to sources, the state administration has selected land for the project, and after international tenders are released and allotment procedures are finished, construction is anticipated to start.

Tara Devi (Goyal Motors), Tara Devi Temple, Shoghi, Waknaghat, Waknaghat IT City, Karol Ka Tibba, Solan, Barog, Dagshai Cantonment, Jabali, and Parwanoo are the eleven stations along the ropeway that would run from Shimla to Parwanoo. Depending on their preference, passengers can either depart at any stop along the way or continue the entire distance.

All stations will have ticket counters, and when the project is finished—which should be in 2030—ticket pricing will be set. Either a tri-cable system for the cable cars or a mono-cable detachable gondola system will be used by the ropeway.

Approximately 20,000 to 22,000 cars drive the 90 kilometres between Shimla and Parwanoo every day on average. The number rises to between 40,000 and 45,000 cars on weekends or during the busiest travel times, such as summer, Christmas, and New Year.

Travel times of up to five hours are occasionally delayed by the transit of trucks loaded with apples. However, it is anticipated that travel time will decrease after the four-lane highway is completed, TNIE reported.

In an interview, Ajay Sharma, the Director of the Ropeways Transport Development Corporation (RTDC), stated that the ropeway project is expected to cost Rs 5,571 crore and be finished by 2030 through public-private partnership (PPP).

"The detailed project report (DPR) of the project has been submitted by the Tata Consultancy and now we are analyzing the report and by next two weeks the global tenders of the project will be floated. We have given the indicative design as the cable cars will be either of mono cable detachable gondola (MDG) system which can carry between 8 to 10 passengers or 3S technology which can carry up to 25 passengers,’’ he said.

904 persons would be ferried by the ropeway per hour per direction, Sharma said. "Thus around 25 lakh passengers per year are expected to travel to and fro per year and will be major tourist attract besides decongesting the traffic to the Shimla and by 2063 it is expected to achieve it’s peak capacity of about one crore,” he said.
