Furious monsoon rains take 252 lives in Madhya Pradesh!
text_fieldsBhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government informed that 252 people have died so far this monsoon season, when 3,628 people were safely evacuated from the affected areas through rescue operations across the state. The figures were shared during a video conference with district collectors chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
Officials informed the Chief Minister that 3,065 people are currently sheltering in 53 relief camps. The officials said the camps provide them with essential services like food, water, medicines, and clothing.
The state government has allocated Rs 3,600 crore from the Disaster Relief Fund to support relief operations. Of this, Rs 28.49 crore has been disbursed through local bodies. NDRF teams have been deployed in Bhopal, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Dhar. Meanwhile, SDRF teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas across the state.
According to government figures, of the 252 deaths, 47 were due to rain-related accidents and 132 drowned in rivers or streams. Sixty people were killed by lightning, and 13 died when houses, walls and trees collapsed. Houses have also been damaged in the rain. A total of 128 houses were completely destroyed, and 2,333 were partially destroyed. About 254 rural roads were also damaged due to the rain.
A total of 432 animals, mostly milch cattle, and 1,200 chickens have lost their lives in rain-related incidents.
Madhya Pradesh has received 711.3 mm of rainfall so far, which is 59% above the seasonal average, reported The New Indian Express. Of the state’s 55 districts, 40 have recorded above-normal rainfall and nine have received normal rain. Mandla district in the Mahakoshal region, notably, received 51% of its 1,107 mm average rainfall within just four days.
