In response to the recent tariff escalations by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, the Chinese Embassy in India has called for solidarity between China and India to navigate the economic challenges posed by these measures.

On April 8, 2025, Yu Jing, the embassy's spokesperson, emphasised the mutual benefits of the China-India economic and trade relationship and advocated for joint efforts to overcome the difficulties arising from U.S. tariff actions.

The U.S. administration has implemented a series of tariffs affecting numerous countries, including China and India.

On April 2, 2025, President Trump announced a 10% baseline tariff on all imports, with higher rates for specific nations. China faces a cumulative tariff rate of 54% on its exports to the U.S., while India is subjected to a 26% tariff. These measures are part of the U.S.'s strategy to address trade imbalances and have led to significant global economic repercussions.

In retaliation, China has imposed a 34% tariff on all U.S. goods, effective April 10, 2025. President Trump has further threatened an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports if Beijing does not withdraw its retaliatory measures.

The Chinese Embassy's call for unity with India reflects Beijing's strategy to strengthen alliances amid escalating trade tensions with the U.S. However, analysts remain cautious about the feasibility of such cooperation, citing historical complexities in China-India relations.
