Dalit student going to exam attacked in TN, his fingers severed

Chennai: A class 11 student from a Scheduled Caste (SC) community in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district had his three fingers severed on Monday following a caste driven attack.
Police have detained three minors for attacking the student who was on the way to take an exam.
The family alleged that the student was attacked over kabaddi match where his team defeated opponents belonging to higher castes.
However, police said they were probing if the attack had to with the student’s purported romantic relationship with a girl from the upper caste.
It is reported citing a senior police officer that the student’s father in the complaint cited Kabaddi match as the motive.
However, the preliminary probe after questioning the minors and the victim’s classmates pointed to attack stemming from the student’s ‘purported romantic relationship’ with the sister of one of the detained boys belonging to the Thevar community.
The three minors stopped a bus, dragging the student out who was heading for the exam, before attacking him in the broad daylight, according to the report. The three fingers of his left hand were severed in the attack.
His father also suffered injuries when he intervened to stop the assailants. When people rushed to their help, the attackers fled the scene.
The boys was transported to Tirunelveli Government Hospital where he underwent a surgery to attach his fingers.
