Defence Ministry inks Rs 7,628-crore deal for advanced artillery guns

In a significant move to enhance the Indian Army's strike capabilities, the Defence Ministry on Friday signed a Rs 7,628-crore contract with Larsen & Toubro Ltd for the procurement of K9 Vajra-T self-propelled artillery guns.
This deal marks a major boost for India's artillery modernization efforts under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.
The K9 Vajra, a 155 mm/52 caliber self-propelled tracked artillery gun, is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. It is designed for long-range precision strikes, delivering lethal firepower with high accuracy. The guns are particularly suited for deployment in challenging terrains, including high-altitude areas, and can operate efficiently even in sub-zero temperatures.
The ministry plans to acquire approximately 100 Vajra guns, primarily for deployment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), ensuring enhanced operational readiness in sensitive border areas.
According to the official statement, "This versatile artillery gun, with its superior mobility and precision firepower, will play a pivotal role in strengthening the Indian Army’s capabilities across all terrains."
In addition to bolstering national security, the project is expected to generate more than nine lakh man-days of employment over four years, involving active participation from Indian industries, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
