New Delhi: Amid the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) protest over derogatory remarks made against her by a cleric, Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav said on Monday that such displays of solidarity would have been more meaningful if similar concern had been shown during the violence in Manipur.

Speaking to reporters outside Parliament, Yadav acknowledged the action being taken against the cleric but added, “It’s good that action is being taken now… But it would have been better if similar protests and support had been visible when horrifying incidents like the one in Manipur came to light through footage on social media.”

She further stated, “Back then, if people had stood together the way they are now over the Operation Sindoor issue, it would have shown genuine concern.”

The controversy arose after All India Imam Association (AIIA) President Moulana Sajid Rashidi reportedly made a misogynistic comment about Dimple Yadav, criticising her for wearing a sari during a visit to a mosque. He allegedly compared her to fellow Samajwadi Party MP Iqra Hasan, who had covered her head during a similar appearance.

NDA MPs staged a protest within the Parliament complex in response to Rashidi’s remarks, which drew widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. BJP leader Bansuri Swaraj and Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury were among those who criticised the statement.

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, was also asked to comment on the matter. He responded briefly, saying, “If I speak, it will be inside (the House)… I am aware of that (adjournment of Lok Sabha)… My opportunity is inside.”
