Ballia: A man has been arrested in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly stabbing his one-year-old son to death while in an inebriated state, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Saturday night in Suremanpur village, Bairia area, when the accused, Rupesh Tiwari, attacked his son Kinu with a sharp-edged weapon. Kinu died while being taken for medical treatment, a police officer said. Upon receiving information, a police team reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem, Circle Officer (Bairia) Mohammad Fahim Qureshi added.

The officer said Rupesh Tiwari, an alcoholic, frequently beat his wife, Rina Tiwari. On Saturday evening, he returned home drunk and began assaulting her. He also verbally abused his father, Kamlesh Tiwari, and threatened to kill him. Fearing for their safety, Rina and her father-in-law left the house, leaving Kinu and their three-year-old daughter, Ananya, at home.

When Rina and her father-in-law returned on Sunday, they discovered that Rupesh had fatally stabbed Kinu, severely injuring his jaw, the CO said.

Based on Rina’s complaint, police registered a case against Rupesh under sections 105 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The accused has been arrested and taken into custody, officials confirmed.
