The Bharatiya Postal Administrative Officers Employees Union, affiliated with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), has demanded that an RSS volunteer song be sung at the Christmas celebration programme at the Postal Department headquarters.

The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has criticised the demand.

In a press release, DYFI stated that illegal or sectarian activities should not be permitted at the Postal Department headquarters. It alleged that the union was attempting to turn a season traditionally associated with harmony and goodwill into a source of conflict by insisting on the inclusion of the RSS volunteer song during Christmas celebrations.

DYFI noted that Christmas carols convey messages of unity, harmony, and human values, whereas the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) promotes divisive ideology. Therefore, the demand to replace Christmas carols with RSS Gana Geet was described as unacceptable. The organisation said such actions, driven by narrow political objectives, are illegal and pose a serious threat to public order and communal harmony.

The Postal Department, DYFI said, is an institution that must uphold the democratic and secular values enshrined in the Indian Constitution. It serves as a unifying force connecting regions, communities, and beliefs across the country. The union’s demand, according to DYFI, would undermine the reputation and long-standing traditions of the Postal Department.

The Bharatiya Postal Administrative Officers Employees Union had reportedly submitted a letter demanding that the RSS volunteer song be sung at the Christmas celebration organised by the Postal Department Recreation Club. Following the controversy, the Postal Department informed employees via email that Thursday’s Christmas celebration had been cancelled.
