India becomes world’s third-largest solar power producer, surpasses Japan

India has officially overtaken Japan to secure the third spot globally in solar energy generation, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced on Thursday.
According to figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), India generated 1,08,494 gigawatt hours (GWh) of solar power, while Japan produced 96,459 GWh.
IRENA is an international agency that facilitates energy transition through cooperation, policy guidance, and analytical data on clean energy technologies.
“India has outpaced Japan in solar energy generation producing 1,08,494 GWh compared to Japan's 96,459 GWh and is now the world's third-largest solar power producer,” Joshi said in a post on X.
"Thanks to the visionary leadership of PM @narendramodi ji, India is leading the way in the global clean energy revolution," he added.
This milestone shows India's ongoing commitment to clean energy goals. The country is currently advancing a multi-pronged strategy aimed at achieving a target of 500 gigawatts of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity by 2030.
