Indian foreign ministry confirms ceasefire agreement with Pakistan
text_fieldsNew Delhi: India had agreed to a ceasefire after Pakistan reached out to India, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed on Saturday evening.
In a video of the briefing, Misri said, “Director general of Military Operations of Pakistan called the Director General of Military Operations of India at 15:35 hours earlier this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea, effective from 17:00 hours, according to Indian standard time today. Instructions have been given to both sides to give effect to this understanding. The directors general of military operations will talk again on the 12th of May at 12:00 hours.”
Indian minister for external affairs S Jaishankar wrote on X, "India and Pakistan have today worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action. India has consistently maintained a firm and uncompromising stance against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. It will continue to do so."
Earlier, US President Donald Trump claimed that New Delhi and Islamabad had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire, The Indian Express reported.
Trump had written on Truth Social, “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Minutes after Trump’s post, Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said, “Pakistan and India have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect. Pakistan has always strived for peace and security in the region, without compromising on its sovereignty and territorial integrity!” PTI quoted.
Earlier on the day, the Centre advised all media channels to refrain from using civil defence air raid siren sounds in their programmes other than the community awareness drive.
