Iranian embassy warns of fake social media accounts spreading misinformation on India ties
text_fieldsThe Iranian Embassy in New Delhi has issued a public alert about a spate of fake social media accounts falsely claiming to represent Iranian authorities, accusing them of deliberately spreading misinformation to harm the strong diplomatic relationship between Iran and India.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy flagged the accounts as fraudulent, stating, “Some fake channels, under the name of Iran, are attempting to damage Iran-India relations. These accounts do not belong to Iran.”
The post was accompanied by screenshots of several such accounts, some of which even displayed blue verification checkmarks, potentially misleading users into believing they were legitimate.
Among the misleading narratives circulated by these accounts is the claim that Iran is reconsidering its involvement in the Chabahar port deal with India due to supposed US military movements in the region. The embassy has categorically dismissed these assertions as false and part of a coordinated campaign to undermine bilateral trust.
Initial investigations suggest that many of these accounts may be operating from Pakistan, pointing to an organised effort to distort public opinion and stir diplomatic tension between New Delhi and Tehran.
This misinformation campaign comes at a time when India has been navigating complex regional dynamics with a balanced foreign policy approach. During the recent 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran, India maintained communication with both sides, reflecting its nuanced diplomatic posture.
Highlighting the depth of the India-Iran partnership, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian visited New Delhi during India’s Operation Sindoor - a large-scale evacuation mission during the Israel-Iran conflict. During his visit, he even offered Iran’s support in mediating between India and Pakistan, underlining Tehran’s continued interest in promoting regional peace and cooperation.
