New Delhi: The Malvani Police in Mumbai have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a woman for allegedly criticising ‘Operation Sindoor’, a recent counter-terror operation launched by the Indian armed forces, in a controversial social media post.

The FIR was filed on May 10, and a notice has since been served to the accused, identified as Salma Raffiq Khan, 40, a resident of the OCC area in Malvani-Malad. Khan runs a beauty parlour in the Malvani locality.

According to a police official, the case pertains to a Facebook post shared by Khan, in which she reportedly criticised the operation and made remarks considered provocative. In the post, she allegedly wrote, "Peace over head... When governments make reckless decisions, it's the innocent on both sides who pay the price, not the ones in power." The post also reportedly included an obscene reference to the operation, which authorities deemed offensive and potentially inflammatory.

A senior officer at Malvani Police Station confirmed that a case has been registered under Section 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), related to statements conducing to public mischief, along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

"The content posted was considered potentially inflammatory and disrespectful toward a national security operation. We have issued her a notice under the relevant procedural provisions. There are no prior complaints or cases against her," the officer stated.

Police sources said that action was taken following a formal complaint. After verifying the contents of the post and conducting a preliminary inquiry, an FIR was lodged and a legal notice was served to Khan as part of the ongoing investigation.

‘Operation Sindoor’ was initiated by the armed forces in response to a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, in which 26 people were killed.
