Kozhikode: Spreading fear in Kerala again, the deadly Nipah virus has been confirmed in a Malappuram native, who was under treatment for a while. The infected person is a 42-year-old woman who was hospitalised after serious health issues. Her swab was sent to the Pune Virology Institute for examination, which returned positive on Thursday afternoon. The state health department has initiated measures for prevention.

Her two children were also hospitalised at the Medical College Hospital for fever.

A day before, the family’s domestic cat died, and its body was sent for medical examination.

The woman, who resided along with her family in the second ward of Valanchery Municipality, had been undergoing treatment for various ailments for about a month. The Nipah test was conducted after many tests, and she was under treatment at Perinthalmanna Hospital for a week.

Health department sources say that there is no need to worry, as Nipah can be controlled.

Last year, two people died of Nipah in Malappuram. The disease was confirmed in Vandoor and Pandikkad then.
