Between October 2023 and September 2024, more than 90,000 Indians were apprehended while attempting to enter the United States without proper documentation, according to data from US Customs and Border Protection.

On average, approximately 10 Indian nationals were intercepted each hour at the borders with Mexico or Canada, indicating a continued trend of irregular migration.

Indians comprised 90,415 of the 2.9 million undocumented immigrants apprehended this past year, showing a slight decrease from last year’s 96,917. The total number of migrants from all countries also fell, from 3.2 million in 2023 to about 2.9 million in 2024.

Of the Indians detained, 25,616 attempted entry via the southwestern US border with Mexico, while a larger number, 43,764, crossed the northern border from Canada. The majority of these migrants, 78,312, were single adults, with another 11,531 being classified as family units, and over 500 were unaccompanied minors.

Many Indians who cross the border illegally opt to voluntarily surrender to Border Patrol in hopes of seeking asylum, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal.
