Pakistan releases BSF Jawan Purnam Shaw after three weeks in captivity
text_fieldsNew Delhi: In a major win for India and its security forces, Pakistan Rangers on Wednesday released BSF jawan Purnam Shaw, who had been held in captivity for nearly three weeks.
Shaw had inadvertently crossed the international border in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, straying into Pakistani territory just a day after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 innocent lives.
The Border Security Force (BSF) confirmed his return in an official statement, acknowledging Pakistan’s handover of the Indian jawan.
“Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw has been taken back from Pakistan by BSF at the Attari-Wagha border today at 1030 hrs,” the BSF said in a statement.
“Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw had inadvertently crossed over to Pakistani territory while on operational duty in the area of the Ferozepur sector on 23rd April 2025 around 1150 hrs and was detained by Pak Rangers,” it added.
The handover of the BSF jawan was done in accordance with established protocols. All other guidelines will be followed after his return to the homeland, including his medical tests to ascertain whether he was subjected to torture and inhumane treatment by the Pakistani rangers.
This development comes just days after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10, following heightened tensions triggered by India’s Operation Sindoor on May 7, which targeted terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Earlier, Shaw’s wife, Rajni, visited Ferozepur to meet senior BSF officials, pleading for intervention to secure his release. She was assured that all possible steps were being taken to bring him back safely.
