South Africa returnee in Maharashtra tests positive for Covid-19

A man who travelled from South Africa to Dombivali in Maharashtra has tested positive for Covid-19 announced officials of the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation on Sunday.

It is not yet confirmed whether the man has tested positive for the Omicron variant of Covid-19 which has caused most nations around the world to be put on high alert.

The man travelled form Cape Town to Maharashtra on November 24. He has not made contact with any other person upon returning from abroad said Dr.Pratibha Panpatil who is chief medical officer at the KDMC. He was admitted to the Art Gallery isolation center at the KDMC Center and is currently undergoing treatment.

Dr.Panpatil assured reporters that the government and health workers were on high alert and prepared to deal with the new variant.

South African doctors and scientists have confirmed that the new Omicron variant detected last week culd be up to six times more transmissible than other forms of the virus. Air travel to and from southern Africa has been stalled with countries such as Britain, Australia and Czech Republic having reported their first cases of the variant already.
