Tamil Nadu CM Vijay to meet PM Modi in first official Delhi visit
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph C. Vijay will make his first official visit to New Delhi on Wednesday after taking office.
Vijay is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to submit memoranda requesting increased central funding and expedited approvals for several key infrastructure and development projects, officials said. He is expected to leave for the capital on Wednesday and return to Chennai the same day.
The chief minister will press for greater central support on infrastructure expansion, pending financial allocations, industrial growth initiatives, welfare schemes and major connectivity projects deemed vital to the state’s economic progress.
The visit carries political significance, coming weeks after Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) recorded a striking performance in the Assembly polls. Contesting its first election, the party won 108 of the 234 seats, emerging as the single largest party and ending the long-standing dominance of the Dravidian parties. Falling short of the 118-seat majority, TVK formed a coalition government after securing backing from the Congress, Left parties, the Indian Union Muslim League and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi.
The result represents a notable realignment of Tamil Nadu politics, which has historically been governed by single-party or alliance-led administrations dominated by the DMK or AIADMK.
