The ruling and opposition parties hurled barbs in the Maharashtra legislative council on Wednesday, demanding action against individuals who made offensive remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis questioned whether the MVA's partners, Sena UBT, Congress, and NCP(SP), would denounce former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for "insulting Shivaji Maharaj and his son Sambhaji Maharaj" in his book, Discovery of India.

Ambadas Danve, the Leader of the Opposition, questioned whether any action will be taken against actor Rahul Solarpurkar and Prashant Koratkar for allegedly making objectionable remarks about Shivaji Maharaj, Indian Express reported.

Due to his praise of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, SP MLA Abu Azmi was suspended from the Assembly on Wednesday. The suspension resolution stated that his words insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Danve questioned if Azmi would be imprisoned.

Additionally, he enquired as to what circumstances led to Koratkar's cell phone being confiscated without his being apprehended or traced.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said responding to Danve, that “no one who insults Chhatrapati Shivaji and Sambhaji Maharaj would be spared by the government”.

“But I want to ask the Opposition. Will you condemn what is written about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s book ‘The Discovery of India’?” he said.

In response to the MVA, he enquired as to whether they would denounce Jitendra Awhad, an MLA for the NCP (SP), for making disparaging remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

This led to a commotion in the House, which was adjourned for 10 minutes due to loud sloganeering from both sides. The opposition once more began yelling slogans calling for action against Koratkar and Solapurkar when the House reconvened.

There was a ruckus during Question Hour when the opposition entered the veil and sat there and shouted slogans for around 20 minutes. After LoP Danve asked Speaker Ram Shinde for time to discuss the matter, and CM Fadnavis promised to do so, the commotion subsided.
