Vaishno Devi medical college reapplies for MBBS approval

Jammu: Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME) has reapplied to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for MBBS course approval for 2026-27, after losing its initial nod amid protests over Muslim admissions.

"We have applied after completing all the requisite formalities, including a deposit of nearly Rs 10 lakh as fees for NMC inspection and other formalities," official sources told The Indian Express.

On January 7, the institute sent its 50 first-batch MBBS students—44 of them Muslim—home hours after NMC revoked permission. The move followed protests by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangrash Samiti, a coalition of 60 pro-RSS/BJP groups demanding Kashmir students' transfer elsewhere. They argued the shrine-funded institute should prioritize Hindu pilgrims' offerings.

NMC cited infrastructure deficits, faculty shortages, and clinical material gaps. Officials denied major issues then but now expect stronger compliance: Narayana Superspecialty Hospital will integrate from April 1, boosting teaching staff, doctors, and facilities across 20+ specialties.

Inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi in 2016 near Katra, the hospital's addition addresses key concerns ahead of NMC's April-May inspection.

The displaced students were adjusted in seven new Jammu & Kashmir government medical colleges—22 to Kashmir Valley sites, 28 to Jammu province.
