New Delhi: It seems the Congress leadership is not happy with senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor’s praise for Modi administration’s handling of India Pakistan tension, NDTV reported.

At a press conference called by Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera yesterday, the Grand Old Party’s leader Jairam Ramesh responded to a question related to Tharoor’s remarks saying that ‘When Tharoor saab speaks, it is not the party's opinion’.

The Congress, having thrown its weight behind Operation Sindoor, has started asking the government to explain the US role in broaching ceasefire with Pakistan.

US President Donald Trump claimed in the midst of the conflict that the US brokered ceasefire between India and Pakistan alongside averting a ‘nuclear conflict’.

Ramesh said PM Modi had not yet responded to President Trump’s claims despite the Congress party kept asking why Trump announced the ceasefire.

Adding further, he said External Affairs Minister Dr SJaishankar did not say anything when US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claimed that the US played an important role to stop the war.

However, Tharoor whole-heartedly praised the government saying ‘The government has taken care not to give the other side an opportunity to expand the conflict in the sense that they have only attacked identified terror bases and launchpads’.

The former diplomat rubbished the US claims that it had mediated for ceasefire, instead he said that Pakistan reached out to India after India’s attack ‘shook Islamabad’, according to NDTV.

Following Tharoor’s remarks, BJP leader Amit Malviya praised him taking to social media platform X: ‘The Congress party has distanced itself from Shashi Tharoor's statement upholding India's sovereignty and its decision to defend itself against external aggression. It is ironic that Tharoor is perhaps the only Congress leader who made sense and stood with India in this situation’.

However, it is reported citing the Congress sources that a section of Congress leaders believe that Tharoor has crossed what the report said ‘Lakshman Rekha’, meaning ‘boundary’.

At a meeting of senior leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K C Venugopal, Ramesh, Tharoor and Sachin Pilot yesterday in Delhi, the leadership reportedly said that leaders should ‘amplify’ the party’s stand, rather than expressing individual opinions.
