New Delhi: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully evacuated a 68-year-old critically ill patient from Lakshadweep on November 13 and transported them to a hospital in Kochi for further treatment, the Defence Ministry reported on Thursday.

The patient, diagnosed with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and type 2 respiratory failure, required immediate medical evacuation. In response, the ICG launched a Dornier aircraft from its district headquarters in Kochi, coordinating with the Lakshadweep Headquarters and local administration for the operation.

The patient was flown from Agatti and medically escorted to the General Hospital in Ernakulam, Kochi, where they are now receiving further care.

This swift evacuation is part of the ICG's ongoing efforts to provide critical support to the Lakshadweep Administration and ensure the safety and well-being of the islanders. The operation underscores the ICG's commitment to maintaining life-saving connectivity between Lakshadweep and the mainland, in line with its motto, "Vayam Rakshamah" (We Protect).
