Minister Saji Cherian alleges rise in ‘divisive politics’ in Kerala
text_fieldsThiruvananthapuram: Kerala Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cherian on Wednesday expressed concern over a “significant surge in divisive politics” in the state, pointing to recent controversies surrounding Zumba sessions in schools and objections to the title of the film Janaki vs The State of Kerala.
Speaking at a public event, Cherian alleged that certain vested interests were deliberately spreading “contempt and animosity in society”.
"Divisive politics is rising on a large scale in Kerala," he claimed.
Referring to the ongoing protests, the minister highlighted that while one group is opposing Zumba on school campuses, another is targeting the film Janaki, alleging that its title disrespects a goddess.
Sources revealed that the film, directed by Pravin Narayanan, was denied screening clearance as authorities contended that 'Janaki'—another name for Goddess Sita—cannot be used for such a character.
He also criticised the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) for supporting calls to review the state government’s move to introduce Zumba in schools under its anti-drug campaign. Questioning the intent behind the opposition, he asked, “Whose interests were they protecting…?”
The high-energy fitness programme, implemented by the General Education Department, has faced resistance from certain Muslim groups who claim it clashes with “moral values”.
Cherian went on to accuse the opposition of aligning with communal forces to gain political mileage during elections. He also referenced the recent denial of certification for the film Janaki vs The State of Kerala by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), alleging that officials blocked the film over its title while acting under “BJP-RSS influence”.
Additionally, the minister alleged that a newly formed Christian organisation in the state was running a communal campaign and spreading “anti-Islam” sentiment, with RSS support, in a bid to create “political divisions among minorities”.
