Wayanad: Survivors of the devastating landslides that struck Mundakkai-Chooralmala in Wayanad last year staged a protest on Monday, alleging severe delays in receiving the promised government assistance.

Those worst affected by the disaster said their lives remain in crisis due to the state’s failure to disburse the assured monthly rent and relief payments. They demanded immediate release of the ₹300 daily relief and the monthly housing rent, which the government had pledged following the tragedy.

Tensions escalated during a protest march to the Vythiri Taluk Office, where pushing and shoving were reported as emotions ran high. Protesters accused the government of mismanaging public donations collected for disaster relief and failing to channel the funds towards those in urgent need.

Responding to the protest, the Tahsildar assured demonstrators that the pending rent payments would be disbursed within 30 minutes. Additionally, officials instructed severely affected individuals who have not yet received the ₹300 daily relief to submit fresh applications for processing.

The landslides, which occurred on July 30, 2024, claimed nearly 300 lives and left many injured, leaving the region grappling with long-term recovery challenges.
