Assam: Headmaster suspended for Quran recitation in school assembly

Guwahati: The headmaster of a government school in Bongaigaon, Assam, has been suspended after students were found reciting the Quran during morning assembly prayers, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on Monday.
A video that went viral on social media over Independence Day appeared to show students of 619 Paschim Bhadragaon Lower Primary School reciting the first chapter of the Quran. Following a preliminary inquiry by the district education department, it was revealed that students at the school, located in a Muslim-majority area, had been reciting the Quran daily during morning assembly.
“The headmaster of the school has been placed under suspension. We will take all steps to prevent any kind of radicalisation in our schools,” Sarma stated in a post on X. Most students at the school belong to the minority community.
