Dhaka: Bangladesh recorded two new COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities this month to 22, officials said on Saturday. The country reported its first death from the virus this month on June 5, when a man died in Dhaka.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), seven new infections were reported during the same 24-hour period, with the daily test positivity rate rising to 3.87 percent. A total of 174 samples were tested.

Amid rising COVID-19 cases in neighbouring countries, the interim government has advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to affected regions. Authorities have also directed all ports to strengthen health screening and surveillance to help curb the spread of the virus.

To address concerns over waning immunity, the DGHS is preparing a fresh vaccination campaign targeting high-risk groups, including those above 60, frontline workers, and individuals with comorbidities. DGHS Director General Md Abu Jafor confirmed that approximately 1.7 million vaccine doses are currently in stock for the campaign.

The DGHS issued updated directives on Monday, citing the spread of new coronavirus subvariants in neighbouring countries such as India, prompting further precautions and monitoring measures across Bangladesh’s entry points.

The country reported 10 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, followed by 13 cases the next day, highlighting a gradual uptick in infections.
