As Delhi experiences a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to hit 45 degrees Celsius, the Union Health Ministry released an advisory on Wednesday recommending that individuals remain indoors during the hottest parts of the day and adopt precautions to avoid heat-related health issues.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the national capital, indicating sustained high temperatures, with nighttime lows predicted to remain near 29 degrees Celsius. The IMD states that the severe weather is part of a larger heatwave affecting northwestern India.

In its guidance, the Health Ministry warned people to avoid going outside between 12 noon and 3 p.m. and highlighted the necessity of remaining hydrated. "Severe heat can pose risks."

“During peak hours, remain indoors, consume light meals, stay hydrated with safe beverages, and do not leave children or pets unattended in parked cars,” the ministry said in a post on the social media platform X.

The guidance additionally encompassed vital health and safety suggestions: refrain from engaging in intense physical exertion during peak traffic times, ensure adequate airflow while preparing food, and avoid drinking alcohol, tea, coffee, or sweet and fizzy drinks.

It also advised wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and using hats, umbrellas, or towels to shield the head when outdoors.

Residents were also encouraged to call emergency numbers 108 or 102 if heatstroke is suspected, particularly if an individual shows signs such as elevated body temperature, disorientation, or loss of consciousness.

The IMD reinforced the message by warning that the heatwave is expected to continue until at least June 12. On Tuesday, Delhi recorded its peak temperature of the season at 43.8°C, exceeding the seasonal average by 3.6 degrees.

Healthcare professionals have expressed concern regarding the increase in heat-related health problems. Dr Atul Kakar, Senior Consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine at a hospital in Delhi, mentioned that numerous patients are experiencing signs of dehydration and heat-related stress.

Due to the anticipated continuation of the heatwave, officials have advised the public to stay alert and prioritise preventive steps. The Health Ministry's advisory underscored the message: “Temperatures are increasing, but knowledge can preserve lives. Together, let’s conquer the heat.”
