Iran retaliates against Israel with fresh missile barrage
text_fieldsTel Aviv: Iran launched a fresh wave of missile attacks on Israel early Saturday in retaliation for a major deadly attack on Tehran’s nuclear sites and military leaders the previous day, according to Iranian state media.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that multiple projectiles were fired towards Israeli territory, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing hostilities between the two nations. “Another barrage has been fired towards Israel,” the military said in a brief statement, without disclosing the number of missiles or specific impact zones.
In central Israel, an Iranian missile reportedly struck near a residential area, injuring at least 10 civilians. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance and assess the damage.
The Israeli government has placed the country on high alert, urging residents in several regions to remain in protected areas.
In a show of support, the United States military stepped in to bolster Israel’s air defenses. Two American officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said U.S. forces had successfully intercepted several Iranian missiles en route to Israel. They did not reveal whether the interception was carried out by fighter jets, missile systems, or naval forces.
Earlier, nearly 100 missiles were fired from Iran towards central and northern Israel in two large-scale attacks. According to the Israeli military and the national emergency service, Magen David Adom (MDA), the strikes left 41 people injured.
The MDA reported that two people were critically wounded, two sustained moderate injuries, four had light to moderate wounds, and the rest suffered light injuries or trauma-related symptoms such as panic attacks.
Air defense sirens were activated across the country, forcing millions into shelters for more than an hour.
IDF spokesman Effie Defrin said that most of the incoming missiles were intercepted or failed to hit their targets. Many of the injuries, he added, were caused by shrapnel from intercepted missiles, with some occurring inside buildings.
