Oman: Crossing flooded wadis may void insurance claims, FSA warns

Oman’s Financial Services Authority (FSA) has warned motorists that deliberately crossing flooded wadis or ignoring official safety instructions may lead to the loss of insurance compensation in the event of damage or accidents.
The authority said the unified motor insurance policy, which includes both comprehensive and third-party coverage, provides protection against losses caused by natural disasters such as flash floods, storms, hail and cyclones. However, coverage is subject to policyholders taking necessary precautions and complying with safety directives issued by the Royal Oman Police.
The FSA stated that motorists who intentionally drive through wadis or leave vehicles in flood-prone areas without adequate precautions risk forfeiting their right to compensation if damage occurs. Insurance companies will not cover vehicles submerged due to deliberate actions by their owners.
Authorities also cited Article 49/8 of the Omani Traffic Law, which imposes penalties on drivers who deliberately cross wadis in a manner that endangers lives. Offenders may face imprisonment for up to three months, a fine of up to OMR 500, or both.
The warning comes amid ongoing concerns over flash flooding in parts of the country, with officials urging motorists to adhere to safety guidelines and avoid high-risk areas during adverse weather conditions.
